I thought i'd post the photographs of Saturday's cake making effort. Let's just say i'm happy Saturday is behind me, and in hindsight i can appreciate the challenge that was making a Wedding cake and a Birthday Cake in one morning, which began at 4am.
I am by no means a baker, i just bake because i love it, so these had their imperfections which i'll try to iron out next time...
Along with the photography below, are a few tips on how to achieve a similar look.
The Wedding Cake
To achieve this delicate, gold flower bed, i used five main ingredients:
1. Piping gel
3. Sugar pearls
4. Edible gold powder
Once the cake is covered with fondant, brush on piping gel as the 'glue' for the H&Ts and sugar pearls. Only brush gel where you want things to stick. Apply the H&Ts and sugar pearls liberally and let dry. Next, mix the gold powder, with a tiny amount of vodka, until you get an opaque gold paint. Brush the gold over H&Ts and sugar pearls. You may need to repeat this a few times to build up the gold colouring.
The Birthday Cake
This was a fun cake for a little fellow who turned 1 on Saturday. My brief: he likes blue!
To get a blue dribble like this one, you need:
1. Heavy cream
2. White chocolate
3. Blue food colouring
In a double boiler, melt the white chocolate, then add an equal portion of cream. Add the food colouring and mix over low heat until you have a smooth ganache. Let this cool, so the ganache becomes thick. You are now ready to dribble the ganache over your iced cake - remember to go easy as the sides will flow quickly if too much is applied to the top edges of your cake.
